Abstract:
Three aspects of transforming the problem in the context of vehicle routing will be considered. The first concerns how a real situation is modelled. Logistics operations often exhibit features that present challenges in producing an appropriate model. The second aspect concerns the detailed formulation once the problem has been specified. Many vehicle routing problems can be formulated in different ways that can affect their ease of solution. Thirdly, new variants of vehicle routing problems will be considered where the objectives are not only economic, as is usual in conventional vehicle routing models, but consider other objectives such as those concerned with safety, service and pollution.

• "Recycling heuristics: examples in logistics and solid waste management",

Abstract:
We present our experience in the use of heuristic methods for the solution of real-world applications in the solid waste collection and logistics areas. The complexity of the constraints and operational rules that have to be considered, normally shifts most of the attention to the modeling issues rather than on the quality of solutions. In these situations heuristic design should guarantee high flexibility, to easily incorporate new constraints/rules, reusability (i.e. recycling) of existing approaches and provide quickly reasonable solutions. We report on our use of approaches (as ruin and recreate, adaptive guidance,...) that allows using existing heuristics that solve relevant sub-problems (VRP, Bin Packing,...) as building blocks for the solution of more complex problems.
