Goal The goal of the Belgian Society for Microscopy vzw is to foster interaction between microscopists in Belgium (and immediate surroundings). Although the society originated as an Electron Microscopy Society, the scope has broadened in the late 1990’s to include all techniques that provide structural and chemical information with high spatial resolution. Language The BSM is one of the few true Belgian societies, with members from both the Flemish and the Walloon Regions and from Brussels; English is used as the common academic language. The statutes are in Dutch, as prescribed by Belgian law, because the formal seat of the Society is in Antwerp. However, the multilingual character of our society is still visible in our logo, which contains the acronyms BVM (Belgische Vereniging voor Microscopie) and SBM (Société Belge de Microscopie), the two original names of the society while our name is now BSM - Belgian Society for Microscopy. Activities Meetings: The Annual Meeting is usually held in the fall. From time to time we organize a joint meeting with one of the neighboring Microscopy Societies. The annual General Assembly, where society matters are discussed, is usually part of the Annual Meeting. Symposia on specific topics can be organized at any time.
